    Kenji Ohmori has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2009. Following his recent honors including Japan Academy Medal and JSPS Prize in 2007, the present election to APS Fellowship is a distinct honor signifying international recognition of his outstanding contributions to science.

    Prof. Kenji Ohmori focus on coherent control which is based on manipulation of quantum phases of wave functions. It is a basic scheme of controlling a variety of quantum systems from simple atoms to nanostructures with possible applications to novel quantum technologies. His group have developed high-precision wave-packet interferometry by stabilizing the relative quantum phase of two molecular wave packets on the attosecond time scale. Their high-precision spatiotemporal coherent-control is applied to information processing with molecular wave functions, and is utilized for exploring the quantum/classical boundary in various quantum systems ranging from laser-cooled atoms to bulk solids.

    Roger Falcone is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America. He received the Young Investigator Award of the National Science Foundation in 1984-89, was a Distinguished Traveling Lecturer of the APS Laser Science Topical Group (1992-93), and received the Halbach Prize for Instrumentation at the Advanced Light Source, LBNL in 2000.

    He is interested in the coherent control of the structure of matter by the use of ultrashort pulses of laser radiation. In order to initiate and monitor such material dynamics, his group develop lasers with ultrashort pulse length (measured in femtoseconds, 10-15 s) and time-resolved scattering techniques (using intense synchrotron x-ray source). They record atomic motion on the femtosecond time scale and Angstrom length scale associated with fundamental motions of bound atoms. Research projects involve condensed matter, atomic, and plasma physics. Applications to induced structural changes in biological and nanoscale systems are also possible.
